After a tough start to the weekend and only qualifying in 18th position after QP1. Robbie was out to make amends and hopefully get a front row start for the 15 lap race.
Only minutes before QP1, down came the rain which sent the whole team into panic mode. The uncertainty of what the track would be like left everyone fretting about whether to change to wet tyre's. All eyes were skyward as the decision to stay with dry’s was made! It would remain to be seen if the gamble would pay off!
The session started and so did the tension. Robbie took his time at first assessing the track finding where the wet spots were and feeling his way. The track was wet and greasy, he found himself getting in to a rhythm that was hard to break and even though the track was improving Robbie did not. At the end of the session he was left in 18 position, disappointed and understandably frustrated. All talk was for tomorrow, what would the weather bring and would Robbie be able to improve?
“I am absolutely gutted about qualifying 1. I had a brilliant setup and I was there and there abouts in free practice. Down came the rain and it was hard to make a decision on what tyres to use. We opted for dries and on the first few laps the track was very wet. I was sliding everywhere and it wasn’t doing my confidence any good. I pulled into the pits and waited a few minutes, when I went out the track was almost dry all around, I got caught up in some thick traffic and my confidence wouldn’t let me go quicker, I just wasn’t sure about the conditions, still at least I am on the grid and I need to sort myself out for QP2” commented and frustrated Robbie
Saturday dawned dry, and after a few changes to the bike QP2 arrived. The track was perfect and Robbie went out building in confidence with each lap. He was on a real fast lap when out came the red flag! After a stop of 1 minuet Robbie was out again, he was improving again and again. He moved into 5th position and was on another fast lap he went into the Esses and that was it, he was off!
The session ended, Robbie in 5th, the bike a little worse for wear and Robbie, well that’s for him to say.
“Well, what can I say? The session started very well indeed, I was getting quicker and quicker and on the lap I was up on the first sector, the session was stopped. Heading out for the last 5 minutes, things were feeling good and I was sure I could better my time. Then, into corner 2, I went down the gears and the bike didn’t seem to select them, I missed the corner and scraped the lap. I then cruised down the straight in the hopes I would get one more fast lap. Then, into the esses I tipped left and then into the right the back end came around on me. There is was, my first crash of the season! Its obviously a shame to damage the bike, and to be perfectly honest, I wasn’t sure what I did wrong, still, I am confident from my grid position and now its onto fixing the bike ahead of tomorrows race! Watch This Space!!!”
