After a disappointing finish in race 1 at Brands Hatch, where Robbie finished in a mediocre 6th Position, things weren’t looking too good for race 2. Robbie remained confident and changed a few things ahead of morning warm-up, which helped improve his times on very old tyres.
Robbie started the race on the front row, in 4th position, and after a sensible starting lap, Robbie took charge and started coming through the field. Robbie continued to push Matt Bilton, but in the meantime, Jimmy Hill, who won the first of the double headers, was pulling away and managed to gain a healthy lead. Then, on lap 8, Jimmy exited the race spectacularly at the famous Paddock Hill bend, leaving Robbie and Matt fighting for the lead.
Knowing he could win the final race, Robbie took charge and got into the lead on lap 10; however, after putting some lap record laps in, Robbie couldn’t break free of second place man Matt. He continued to push hard and managed to gain a healthy lead onto the last lap, taking the flag by 0.5 seconds.
“This is what it’s all about for me, I can’t get over it, it’s been an up and down weekend and I truly wanted to win here more than anywhere, as I know the teams are watching for 2009!
Race one didn’t go to plan, I had a poor start and I was 12th on the first lap, from then on it was just hard work, I managed to finish in 6th but the championship was gone as Lee finished 3rd.
I made a few changes overnight which worked brilliantly, and I just knew I could do it. I pushed and pushed and the race just seemed to go well, I got a brilliant start and managed to stay with the leaders, once I was in the lead I never looked back, although my pit board was showing I had no lead, I had a little in reserve should someone come steaming past so I just pushed and pushed to the flag!
Its a great end to the season, after such a dreadful start with the Kawasaki team, we picked ourselves up and proved to everyone that privateers can win against the likes of UK1, Raceways and Embassy!” explained Robbie
Robbie was then asked what his future hopes or plans were and he said
“Next year is really dependant on the backing we get from sponsors. It would be great to say I am sorted for next year but it really doesn’t work like that. It’s been the hardest year of my career and hopefully I have proven my worth to the bigger teams in the paddock. Hopefully I will know a little more in the next month or two! Watch this space!” commented Robbie
