This weekend at Thruxton, Robbie completed many laps, which helped him set the bike up just right for the race. He was improving every session and showing just how capable he is of finishing inside the top 10 in the main British Supersport race.
After a few teething problems, Robbie managed to qualify 10th for the race, which was a career best.
He head out for the race very confident of a top 10 finish. He got a very slow start and dropped back. Then, there was a huge crash involving Lee Johnston and Dennis Hobbs, which resulted in the race being red flagged.
There was a fast restart and Robbie got a much better start, holding his position. He fought a very hard race and never had a break. He managed to stay with the pack fighting for 10th, but unfortunately suffered from tyre wear and began sliding, none the less, Robbie continued trying but slipped to 16th with 3 laps to go. He pushed and pushed, and managed to pass a few riders, crossing the line in 10th position.
"That was quite possibly the hardest race of my life! I never had time to assess the situation, every time I braked 1 metre early, someone dived under me, it was mayhem. I got a bad start in the first leg of the race, which was unfortunately stopped due to a huge crash. Once the second part of the race got underway, the bike felt good, but began sliding very early into the race. I pushed and pushed and then we found another problem - gearing. I was slipstreaming 5 riders most of the time, which meant the bike was way out and over revving everywhere. Still, I pushed and pushed and managed to get 12th in the main race, and 1st in the cup. It would have been nice to have got a top 10 finish, but still, after the problems we had with the bike at the last round, I won’t complain! I now feel sure in my mind I am capable of top 10 finished in the main race, and now we have had our first win in the Cup, I intend to keep them going throughout the season.
We have a couple of weeks off now, and I am entered for a half marathon so I need to keep training for that. I intend to be at Snetterton fitter than ever and rearing to go! Roll on Snett!" explained Robbie
Now we have a 2 week break ahead of Snetterton, Round 5 of the VISK British Superbike Championship, where Robbie hopes to continue his winning form.
Photos from the Thruxton weekend will be shortly uploaded to this website, thanks to Steve Gough.
