Steady Progress at Brands Hatch GP PDF Print E-mail

Robbie heads away from Brands Hatch still with a great chance of taking the 2009 Supersport Cup championship, after a career best 11th place finish in the main Supersport race and 2nd in the Cup series.

Robbie had been struggling with setup all weekend, trying to find those vital tenths of seconds to close the gap between him and his rivals.
Testing some new parts for the first time, things weren’t always going to plan, as the parts were coming off quicker than they went on; such is the problem with testing while at race meetings. Still, the whole team worked hard and got their head down for Qualifying. Where Robbie was unable to get down to the times he knew he was capable of, lying in 22nd in QP1.
With the temperature increasing throughout the day, it was going to be difficult to match, let alone better the times set in QP1. Still, Robbie managed to do some very consistent laps and bettered his position to 18th on the grid for Sunday’s race, 3rd in the Cup.

Making a few minor tweaks before the race, the team were confident of a podium result in the cup, but it was always going to be difficult against Dean Hipwell and Sam Lowes, who both seemed to be inch perfect throughout the practices.
During the early laps, Robbie set into a rhythm and began to close the gap on the group in front. Laps went by with no overtaking until Robbie began to get pressure from behind in the form of Dean Hipwell. Knowing Dean had the pace, Robbie pushed harder and harder each lap, eventually managing to hold onto 2nd position, 11th in the main race after a safety car interrupted race.

“This weekend has been up and down for me. I absolutely love this circuit and I really wanted to get back to winning ways. We were testing parts throughout the weekend, which didn’t really help, but unfortunately we have no choice as I have no more holidays I can take from work, so almost all of the testing is done at the race weekend.
It seemed that we were always going to be 2nd or even 3rd best here. Throughout all of the practices I had been behind Sam (Lowes) and Dean (Hipwell) so I had to give everything to keep with them. Before the race I aimed for a podium finish, knowing how tough it was going to be, and to get 2nd is a big bonus. It was a really difficult race with a lot of crashes, which is never good. Still, we managed to keep it upright and get some valuable points in the championship, and also got my career best finish which is another bonus, not where we want to be, ideally top 10 would be brilliant as I know I am capable, but my main aim is to tie up the Cup championship.
The gap has increased slightly to championship leader Sam, but its still only a small gap, and with the next few circuits my favourites, I intend to be fighting for the win and not second best!”
